UAE mourns Lt-Gen Hamad bin Suhail Al Khaili passing

Omar Abbas - | Mix

On May 23, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's personal adviser, Lieutenant General Hamad bin Suhail Al Khaili, an eminent member of the Emirati military, died.

The Presidential Office of Sheikh Mohamed issued the statement. The founding father of the UAE was known to have had Al Khaili as a military comrade. Noting the loss to the country, the Presidential Office sent the family its deepest sympathies and condolences.

The nation's authorities held Al Khaili in the highest regard; Vice-President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, also sent his heartfelt condolences.

A Month of Mourning

This loss comes shortly after the death of another close associate of Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohamed Al Nahyan, earlier this month. These consecutive losses mark a significant period of mourning for the UAE, highlighting the end of an era for those who closely supported the nation's founding leader.

Lt-Gen Hamad bin Suhail Al Khaili, who was born in the 1920s, committed his life to serving his nation. He started his military career serving as Sheikh Zayed's close escort, a position in which he excelled in both competence and commitment. Al Khaili advanced through the military ranks throughout time, becoming a lieutenant general in the end.

Al Khaili received the esteemed Abu Dhabi Award in 2005 in appreciation of his service to the United Arab Emirates. This honor is bestowed upon people who have significantly improved the growth and well-being of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates as a whole. The fact that Al Khaili received this honor confirms his standing as one of the country's visionaries.

Lt-Gen. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, paid a heartfelt tribute to Al Khaili, describing him as an "uncle, a big brother, and a loyal friend." This personal testament highlights the deep bonds Al Khaili formed with those he served alongside, reflecting his personal and professional integrity.

Legacy of Loyalty and Service

Al Khaili's legacy is marked by his unwavering dedication to the UAE and its leaders. His close association with Sheikh Zayed and his rise within the military ranks serve as a testament to his commitment and capabilities. The nation's leadership and citizens remember him not only for his military service but also for his role in shaping the UAE's modern history.

Lt-Gen Hamad bin Suhail Al Khaili's passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the UAE's history. His contributions to the nation's development and security are deeply appreciated and will be remembered by future generations. The condolences from the highest levels of the UAE leadership reflect the profound impact he had on the country and its people.
