The "Your Commitment Means Safety" campaign, which was started by Ajman Police, exhorts drivers to follow lane regulations in order to avoid fines.

What you should know to drive safely is provided here.

Ajman Police recently reinforced the importance of maintaining lane discipline on the roads to enhance safety and prevent accidents. Motorists are reminded that illegal steering can result in hefty fines and penalties. In a social media announcement, authorities highlighted several factors that contribute to illegal swerving, including unsafe vehicle tires and failure to conduct regular vehicle inspections. These factors can significantly increase the risk of accidents and endanger road users.

Safety Guidelines for Motorists

As part of the campaign, Ajman Police emphasized the following safety guidelines for motorists:

  • Use of Indicators: Always use indicators when changing lanes to inform other drivers of your intentions.

  • Driving in Adverse Conditions: Follow safety protocols when driving in adverse weather conditions such as rain, ensuring visibility and reducing speed to prevent accidents.

  • Avoiding Distractions: Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions such as using mobile phones while driving.

  • Adhering to Speed Limits: Respect specified speed limits to maintain control of the vehicle and ensure the safety of all road users.

According to Lt. Col. Rashid Humaid bin Hindi from the Ajman Police traffic and patrols department, sudden swerving can result in a fine of Dh1,000 and four black points on the driver's license in the UAE. Such penalties are enforced to deter reckless driving behavior and promote road safety.

Statistics from the Ministry of Interior reveal that sudden swerving was a significant factor in road accidents, contributing to 71% of total fatalities and 61% of injuries on UAE roads in 2023. These alarming figures underscore the critical need for motorists to adhere to lane discipline and avoid sudden maneuvers. In 2023, there were 352 road fatalities across the UAE, marking a slight increase compared to 2022 but a decrease from the figures recorded in 2021. Ajman specifically recorded 11 deaths and 133 injuries due to road accidents last year, highlighting the ongoing challenges in enhancing road safety in the region.

Safety Measures for Lane Changes

To ensure safe lane changes, motorists are advised to follow these essential safety measures:

  • Use Indicators: Signal your intention to change lanes using indicators.

  • Check Mirrors: Assess your left, right, and rear-view mirrors to ensure no vehicles are approaching.

  • Blind Spots: Look over your shoulder to check blind spots for other vehicles before making a lane change.

  • Space Check: Ensure there is sufficient space for your vehicle in the adjacent lane before moving over.

As Ajman Police intensifies its efforts through the ‘Your Commitment Means Safety’ campaign, motorists are urged to prioritize lane discipline and adhere to road safety regulations. By following these guidelines and being aware of the consequences of illegal swerving, drivers can contribute to safer roads for all.
