UAE Civil Defense announces initiatives for child drowning prevention

Omar Abbas - | Mix

Brigadier General Ali Obaid Al Tunaiji, Director of the Fujairah Civil Defense Department, underscores critical factors contributing to child drownings during the summer months.

One of the primary causes of child drowning incidents is the lack of adequate swimming skills. Children who are not proficient swimmers are particularly vulnerable to accidents, especially in deep water environments such as the sea or swimming pools. Al Tunaiji emphasizes the importance of early swimming education as a preventive measure. Teaching children basic swimming techniques at an early age significantly enhances their safety around water bodies.

Another significant risk factor identified by Al Tunaiji is the practice of leaving children unsupervised during water activities. Whether at home swimming pools or public beaches, the absence of adult supervision increases the likelihood of accidents. Al Tunaiji also points out the critical role of safety equipment in preventing drowning incidents. The lack of or improper use of safety tools such as life jackets or buoys further heightens the danger for children engaging in water activities.

During the summer season, there is a notable increase in drowning incidents due to heightened participation in water-related recreational activities. Al Tunaiji stresses the need for vigilance and precautionary measures before engaging in any water activities. This includes assessing the marine conditions, choosing safe swimming locations, and being aware of potential risks like strong currents.

Children are particularly vulnerable to drowning accidents due to their limited swimming abilities and tendency to panic in emergencies. Al Tunaiji highlights the importance of continuous supervision by adults when children are near water bodies. Al Tunaiji advocates for strict adherence to safety guidelines to prevent drowning accidents among children and individuals.

Education and supervision

Essential preventive measures include teaching kids the fundamentals of swimming and teaching them about water safety regulations. It is essential for responsible adults to keep an eye on kids at all times, whether they are playing or swimming near water. Children engaged in aquatic activities need an extra layer of protection, which can only be provided by using life jackets and buoys properly.

Prevention of drowning events is mostly dependent on increasing public awareness of water safety and emergency readiness. Risks can be reduced by teaching both adults and children about the perils of water bodies, such as deep water and powerful currents.

Training family members in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) equips them to respond effectively in the event of a drowning emergency. Nabil Ali Al Ali, a seasoned swimming coach and marine lifeguard, offers practical advice on preventing drowning accidents.

Al Ali emphasizes the importance of avoiding areas not designated for swimming, especially those marked with warning signs. These areas may contain hazards such as deep holes or strong currents. Choosing safe swimming locations with favorable weather conditions is crucial in ensuring a safe water experience.

In the event of a drowning incident, swift action and seeking assistance from trained rescuers are imperative for a successful rescue operation. Al Tunaiji urges individuals to promptly seek help from trained professionals or authorities when witnessing a drowning incident.

Trained Supervision

To guarantee their safety and offer prompt aid in case of emergency, somebody skilled in water rescue procedures should always accompany children and inexperienced swimmers. Drowning accidents among persons and children can be considerably decreased by including these preventive measures and encouraging a culture of water safety.
