By adding charging stations to its pay parking spaces, Dubai hopes to improve the infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs).
Parkin, the top supplier of paid public parking facilities in the United Arab Emirates, and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) collaborated on this initiative, which was introduced on Friday. Dewa's "Green Charger" stations will become more widely accessible through the agreement at well-known Parkin-managed venues.
Growing EV adoption in Dubai
The number of electric vehicles in Dubai as of April 2024 is over 30,000, and Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa, said that number is expected to rise in the upcoming years. Furthermore, more people are signing up for the EV Green Charger project; by the end of March 2024, there are over 15,000 registered users.
Parkin, which is exploring monetization opportunities in the EV sector, emphasizes the importance of its parking facilities in supporting the transition to electric vehicles. Given the time required to recharge EVs, Parkin’s extensive parking network is poised to provide convenient access to charging services, thereby encouraging the adoption of EVs. The integration of EV charging stations aligns with Parkin’s growth strategy and offers a significant opportunity to enhance its service platform.
Over 197,000 parking spaces are managed by Parkin in Dubai. The corporation hopes to encourage the usage of clean energy vehicles by using its infrastructure to facilitate the city's transition to sustainable transportation by integrating EV charging stations into these areas.
Since its inception in 2015, the EV Green Charger initiative has facilitated the charging of EVs, enabling them to travel a cumulative distance of approximately 130 million kilometers by the end of March 2024. This initiative plays a crucial role in promoting the use of electric vehicles in Dubai.
For clients whose EVs have been verified with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dewa creates an EV Clean Charger account, which streamlines the process of charging and allows users to charge their cars in less than an hour. To ensure accessibility for all EV users around the city, the guest mode feature also allows any client, regardless of registration status, to charge their EVs.
Supporting sustainable urban mobility
Enhancing Dubai's electric vehicle infrastructure and advancing sustainable urban transportation are made possible by the partnership between Dewa and Parkin. The program intends to lessen range anxiety among EV users and promote the city's environmental goals by adding additional charging stations in handy locations.
The deliberate placement of EV charging stations in pay parking lots throughout Dubai is intended to assist the increasing quantity of electric cars in the city. By launching this program, Dewa and Parkin are supporting Dubai's vision of a sustainable future, in addition to encouraging the use of clean energy vehicles. By making it simpler for locals and guests to charge their cars, the EV Green Charger network expansion will support the Emirate's transition to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation system.
