Dubai announces ban on single-use bags from June 1; fines, exemptions revealed

Omar Abbas - | Arab

The city-wide prohibition on single-use bags, including paper and plastic ones, is set to take effect in Dubai in less than three months.

Dubai's Single-Use Bag Ban

This move comes after the emirate ordered companies to start charging 25 fil per bag for single-use plastic bags earlier this year. There will be a statewide ban on single-use bags at all Dubai retail establishments starting June 1, with no requirement to provide free alternatives.

The policy targets single-use bags typically utilized for carrying goods, emphasizing the importance of shoppers bringing their own reusable carriers. This shift aims to reduce reliance on disposable packaging and promote sustainable shopping practices.

Dubai Municipality recently published an awareness guide detailing the implications of the single-use bag ban. The guide clarifies that even biodegradable bags are included in the ban, emphasizing the need for specialized recycling stations for such materials. Failure to properly dispose of biodegradable bags may result in the generation of microplastics, which pose environmental hazards.

Exemptions from the policy

While the ban encompasses a wide range of single-use bags, certain exemptions have been identified. These exemptions include bags for specific purposes such as bread packaging, online product deliveries, trash bin liners, and wrapping for various perishable items like vegetables, meats, and fish. Additionally, bags used for laundry, electronics, garbage disposal, and grain storage are exempt from the ban.

Penalties for non-compliance

Dubai Municipality has outlined penalties for non-compliance with the single-use bag ban. Offenders face a financial penalty of Dh200 for initial violations, which escalates to Dh400 for repeated offenses. The maximum fine is capped at Dh2,000. Shoppers are encouraged to report non-compliant stores to the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism to uphold the integrity of the policy.

To facilitate understanding and compliance, the municipality has made the awareness guide available online in both Arabic and English. This comprehensive resource addresses common questions from consumers and businesses regarding the ban. It also promotes green alternatives to plastic bags and offers practical tips for fostering sustainability in daily practices.

Dubai's single-use bag ban reflects the emirate's commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management. By reducing the consumption of disposable bags, the policy aims to minimize plastic pollution and mitigate the ecological impact of waste accumulation. Encouraging the adoption of reusable carriers not only conserves natural resources but also fosters a culture of environmental stewardship among residents and businesses. Through collaborative efforts and proactive measures like the single-use bag ban, Dubai continues to pave the way towards a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
