UAE launches covered motorcyclist rest stops in Abu Dhabi

Omar Abbas - | Arab

In a move aimed at improving conditions for delivery drivers in Abu Dhabi, the Joint Traffic Safety Committee, chaired by the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has launched a pioneering initiative. This initiative focuses on establishing covered rest stops across shopping centers in the emirate to shield motorcyclists from harsh weather conditions, particularly during scorching summers.

Enhancing safety for delivery drivers

As part of a new effort to improve working conditions for motorcyclists in the delivery sector across Abu Dhabi Emirate's shopping centers, the Joint Traffic Safety Committee—chaired by the Department of Municipalities and Transport and including members such as the Integrated Transport Center, Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, and the Department of Health—announced the initiative. Covered rest stops will be the primary focus of this program in order to shield these workers from the elements, especially during the hot summer months.

The Joint Traffic Safety Committee, comprising key stakeholders like the Integrated Transport Center, Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, and the Department of Health, spearheads efforts to enhance road safety and mitigate traffic-related incidents in Abu Dhabi. Through collaborative efforts, the committee proposes and implements regulatory measures and initiatives aimed at optimizing traffic flow and reducing accidents.

Abu Dhabi Transport, representing the committee, urges shopping center management to participate in creating conducive environments for delivery drivers. The initiative calls for the installation of covered rest areas equipped with essential amenities such as restrooms, seating arrangements, drinking water refrigerators, and mobile phone charging stations. These facilities will be strategically placed near high-traffic delivery points for easy accessibility.

Expansion of Rest Stops

Building on previous successes, including the provision of parking permits for temporary rest stops in various districts, the initiative now includes establishing permanent rest stops across Abu Dhabi Island, Khalifa City, and Shakhbout City. These locations are carefully selected to cater to the needs of delivery drivers across different areas of the emirate.

Commitment to Traffic Safety

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the committee focuses on advancing traffic education and awareness programs through social media and traditional media channels. By promoting adherence to traffic laws and fostering a culture of safe driving practices, the committee aims to safeguard public health and preserve national achievements in road safety.

The introduction of covered rest stops for motorcyclists underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to enhancing the well-being and safety of delivery drivers. By addressing the specific challenges faced by these essential workers, the initiative aims to create a safer and more supportive environment for all road users in the emirate.
