UAE urges immediate action to prevent Sudan imminent famine

Omar Abbas - | Arab

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made a strong plea to the UN Security Council, highlighting the paramount necessity of prompt action to avert an impending famine in Sudan, in a diplomatically significant gesture.

In its statement, the UAE reaffirmed its unwavering support for efforts to bring about a ceasefire and restore civilian government in Sudan.

Support for Peace Initiatives

The UAE's mission to the UN highlighted its appreciation for the efforts of regional leaders and African Union officials in addressing the Sudan crisis. It has echoed the Peace and Security Council of the African Union's call for leaders of conflicting factions to convene under the auspices of the AU and IGAD, emphasizing the urgency of their participation in upcoming political meetings in Addis Ababa.

Emphasizing the humanitarian urgency, the UAE called on the international community to bolster support for Sudan. It stressed the imperative of unhindered humanitarian relief efforts to alleviate the suffering of civilians. The UAE reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with global and regional partners to mitigate the risk of famine and encourage constructive engagement in political processes.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) reaffirmed its backing for initiatives to defuse tensions, enforce the ceasefire, and forward talks toward the restoration of a lawful administration in Sudan. It highlighted that inclusive discussion is the only path to lasting peace and denounced the use of force to resolve the dispute.

The UAE vehemently denied any participation in providing military hardware to combatants in response to accusations made by representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces. It made clear that the military support that had previously been given had been requested by Sudanese authorities and had been carried out in compliance with Security Council resolutions and international law.

The UAE debunked specific allegations, such as the misidentification of vehicles and the false accusations regarding supply chains. It provided evidence to counter claims, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and adherence to international norms. The UAE highlighted its substantial humanitarian aid efforts, including the establishment of field hospitals near the Chadian-Sudanese border. Despite previous challenges, the UAE has persistently supported Sudan through direct aid and bilateral agreements with UN agencies, totaling $200 million since the conflict's onset.

Strengthening bilateral ties

The statement underscored the enduring relationship between the UAE and Sudan, emphasizing the contributions of the Sudanese community within the UAE. It reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to stand by Sudan during its time of crisis, reflecting on the deep-rooted bilateral ties that transcend current challenges.

The UAE's statement to the UN Security Council underscores its proactive stance in addressing the Sudan crisis with urgency and diplomacy. It calls for robust international support to mitigate humanitarian crises and facilitate a peaceful resolution. The UAE remains committed to advocating for Sudanese civilians and collaborating with global entities to foster stability and prosperity in the region.
